Did you know the worlds oil supply is dwindling? 90% percent of the worlds trasportation relies on petroleum or oil. Trucks, planes, cars, trains, and most of the worlds transportation runs on oil. Also things like toothpaste, medication, detergents, fertilizers, and trash bags are made from oil.
We use so much oil today! In 1956 M.Hubbard proposed a theory about peak production. He saw that an oil field has times when production spikes to a a peak , then production goes down just as fast as it climbed. Hubbard thinks the world supply will peak in about 2030.This is when all the “easy oil” will be gone. Then we might have to drill remote regions like the Caspian Sea or the tundras of Siberia.
Another problem is OPEC and non-OPEC oil. OPEC stands for, Organization of Oil Exporting Countries. OPEC oil is mostly from the Persian Gulf region. It is sometimes difficult to get oil because of war in the Middle East. So, the West tries to rely on non-OPEC oil.Non-OPEC oil production may peak as early as 2015!Then the West will have to use OPEC oil.
As the oil supply begins to decline, scientists are trying to find alternate energy sources. In the meantime you can coserve oil by driving energy efficient cars which also pollute a little less.
These are the OPEC countries.

Dear Rachel,
Turkey has changed a lot since WWI. This is when the Ottoman Empire fell. Then we got a new president, Mustafa Kemal or Kemal Ataturk. Ataturk means “Father of the Turks”. He made many changes to Turkey. For almost a century the men wore a hat called the fez. Fezzes have no brim and it makes it easier to touch your head to the ground in prayer. When Ataturk became president after WWI he told all Turks they must wear hats with brims. To make sure nobody wore the fez, he made a law against them. Women also had changes to their clothing. Before Kemal, women wore veils to hide their faces in public places. Kemal said these veils could not be worn. He also wanted women to participate in the government. They were allowed to go to school and vote. Imagine that! Ataturk insisted Turkey needed to modernize. He moved our capitol from Istanbul to Ankara, introduced a new alphabet, and showed us Western Clothing. After Kemal’s death in 1938, Turkey became a republic. Now Turkey is a modern country and Kemal helped make it one.
Your friend,
Colleen
This is a fez like the ones we wear in Turky.

Today in social studies we started personal timeliness. We put these things on the timeline
- birth
- past events
- future events
Then we put 2 pieces of paper together and drew a line across them. We started 1 inch in and put the year 1990. After 1990 we spaced the years 2 inches apart, 10 years in between the tick marks. For homework we did a planning sheet for the events on the timeline.
